Epitalon is four amino acids, developed in St Petersburg from research on the pineal gland. It is sold with the boldest claim in this entire section: that it slows ageing.

What people take it for

Longevity, first and foremost. Sellers point to telomeres, the protective caps on chromosomes that shorten as cells divide, and describe Epitalon as lengthening them.

Better sleep is the effect users report most often, which is at least mechanistically plausible given the pineal gland's role in melatonin.

What the evidence shows

There is research, and it is genuinely interesting. Studies from the Russian institute where it was developed report increased telomerase activity in cell cultures, extended lifespan in mice, and in one long follow-up of elderly patients, reduced mortality.

The limitation is the shape of the evidence rather than its content. Nearly all of it originates from one institute over several decades, much is published in journals that are hard to access, and independent replication is essentially absent. That is the single-lab problem in its most concentrated form, attached to the least verifiable claim anyone could make. Establishing that something extends human lifespan would take a trial longer than any that has been run.

What to know before

Telomerase is not straightforwardly good. Cancer cells rely on it to divide indefinitely, which is why deliberately increasing telomerase activity is treated cautiously in the research literature rather than as an obvious win.

Better sleep is the effect people can actually notice week to week. The lifespan claim is the part that would take decades to confirm either way.
